Auto Glass Installation
Your windshield, back window or side door window has just been shattered by road debris, a falling object, or childs baseball. Undoubtedly, one of the first things you're thinking about is the cost of window replacement and whether that will be covered entirely, or at least partially, by your auto insurance.

But cost should not be your main concern when it comes to auto glass installation.

The safety of you and your passengers is of primary importance. During a crash, a windshield must act as a "safety net" to reduce occupant ejection. An improperly installed windshield carries the risk that it may come out during an accident or it may render an air bag ineffective. 

 
Auto Glass Installation Standards

The U.S. Department of Transportation has established federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS 212 & 216), which pertain to crash and roll-over testing. Standard 212 is for occupant retention, 216 for rollover and 218 for passenger airbags.

Quality installations require the use of:

state-of-the-art equipment and tools
the highest quality urethane adhesives
installation by trained, experienced, certified technicians

For example, recommendations for modern automobiles is that butyl tape - which holds 60 pounds per square inch - be used as an adhesive instead of urethane - which holds 600 pounds. Once properly installed, the glass should have a complete seal around the perimeter through which no air or water should be able to pass.

In addition, if auto glass installation is pushed down too tight, it may not allow adequate adhesive to act as a cushion to protect the windshield from normal stresses as the vehicle moves over roads.

The National Glass Association certifies auto glass technicians. Level 1 certification (CAGT) requires six months' experience; Level 2 Certified Master Auto Glass Technician (CMAGT) requires at least three years' experience.
